As India heads into the second Test at Edgbaston, trailing 0–1 in the five-match series against England, a major selection call has taken center stage: Should Jasprit Bumrah be rested?

According to former head coach Ravi Shastri, the answer is a firm no. In fact, he believes resting Bumrah at this critical juncture could derail India’s hopes of bouncing back in the series.

"Think Twice Before You Rest Him" – Shastri Sounds the Alarm

Bumrah was India’s standout bowler in the first Test at Headingley, picking up a five-wicket haul in the first innings. But in the second innings, as England chased down 371 with ease, the pace spearhead went wicketless — a rare sight.

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly plans to rotate Bumrah as part of a workload management strategy, playing him in only three of the five Tests. But Shastri sees danger in that approach.

"If you don’t have him and go 2–0 down, it could be an uphill task," Shastri warned.

He also questioned the backup pace options. Between Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna, India’s support attack conceded over 480 runs in the first Test — not ideal when defending big totals.

Ashwin, Gavaskar Also Weigh In

Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin echoed Shastri’s views, calling Bumrah a “superstar” who should be in the XI for a high-stakes Test like this. He suggested India could rest him later in the series if needed.

Adding to the pressure, Sunil Gavaskar was critical of India’s fielding, calling it “not Test class” and urging players to focus more on their preparation.

Some of the recent squad and playing XI decisions have raised serious concerns among experts, former cricketers, analysts, and fans alike. It’s high time the Gambhir-Gill duo takes responsibility and steers India toward a strong comeback.

A Defining Test Ahead

With the second Test beginning July 2 at Edgbaston — a venue where India has historically struggled — the decision to play or rest Bumrah could prove pivotal. For Gambhir and Gill, it’s a moment of early reckoning in this high-pressure series.

One thing is certain: all eyes will be on the team sheet when Day 1 begins.
