Birmingham — In a performance for the ages, India thrashed England by 336 runs in the second Test at Edgbaston, drawing the five-match series 1–1. This emphatic victory – India’s first-ever Test win at this historically challenging venue – starred a batting masterclass by captain Shubman Gill and a devastating bowling spell from young speedster Akash Deep.

Gill’s Double-Century Brilliance

Gill continued his red-hot form, forging an unbeaten 269 in the first innings — the highest by an Indian captain overseas and the third-best away Test score for India. He followed that with a polished 161 in the second innings, making him only the second batter after Allan Border to score 150+ in both innings of a Test. His combined 430 runs ranked as the second-highest overall by a batter in a single Test.

At just 25 years and 301 days, Gill became the youngest Indian captain to win a Test match overseas, surpassing the record previously held by Sunil Gavaskar. His dominance was complemented by a moment of levity on Day 4 when an exchange between him and England’s Harry Brook, caught on the stump mic, went viral — highlighting Gill’s calm wit even under pressure.

Seamers Seal the Deal

With a mammoth target of 608 to chase, England were undone by India’s pace attack. Akash Deep was the undisputed hero with a ten-wicket haul, finishing with match figures of 10/187. His seam movement, especially on Day 5’s damp surface, proved too hot to handle for the English batting line-up.

Mohammed Siraj played a perfect supporting role with timely breakthroughs, while spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar contributed with vital wickets.

England Crumble Under Pressure

Chasing 608, England folded for 271, with brief resistance from Jamie Smith (88) and Ben Stokes (33). However, the Indian bowling proved too relentless. England’s first-innings total of 407 had kept them in the contest briefly, but the gap widened thanks to India’s batting blitz and strategic bowling changes.

Historic Win, Momentum Shift

This win ended a 46-year drought for India at Edgbaston, making it their first Test victory at the venue. The Indian camp celebrated with stumps handed to Gill, Akash Deep, and Siraj — a fitting tribute to their match-winning contributions.

The series, now tied 1–1, shifts to Lord’s for the third Test beginning July 10. With momentum on India’s side and pressure mounting on England, the next chapter in this gripping series promises even more drama and historic moments.

India won their previous Test against England at Lord's, which will boost their confidence heading into the upcoming match.
