Kolkata — The Calcutta High Court has directed Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami to pay a total of ₹4 lakh per month as interim maintenance to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan and their daughter.

According to the court order, Shami is to pay ₹1.5 lakh to Hasin Jahan and ₹2.5 lakh to their daughter every month. Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee termed the revised amount "just, fair and reasonable," significantly increasing the maintenance from a 2023 district court order that granted ₹50,000 for Jahan and ₹80,000 for their daughter.

The High Court's verdict was influenced by Shami's financial capacity, noting his income of around ₹7.19 crore in the financial year 2021. The court emphasized that the amount of maintenance should be in accordance with the standard of living the family enjoyed during the marriage.

Reacting to the verdict, Hasin Jahan expressed satisfaction, calling it a "victory after a long battle." She said that Shami had forced her to leave her professional career after marriage, and that she currently had no personal income. Jahan also noted that ₹4 lakh per month was less than what she originally demanded—₹10 lakh—and hinted that she would push for ₹6 lakh during the ongoing trial phase.

Her advocate, Imtiaz Ahmed, added that the trial court is expected to deliver its final ruling on maintenance within six months and may consider increasing the amount based on the initial demand.

The legal dispute dates back to 2018, when Jahan filed a complaint alleging domestic abuse, dowry harassment, and even match-fixing—allegations that temporarily led to the suspension of Shami’s BCCI contract. He was later cleared and reinstated.

While this interim relief provides some resolution, the case remains open, and the final outcome will be determined by the trial court. For now, the court's order ensures that financial support is secured for Hasin Jahan and her daughter.
