Australia's batting frailties continued on Day 1 of the second Test in Grenada. After electing to bat first, the visitors suffered a major top-order collapse, falling from 47 for no loss to 110 for 5 by the second session. The dismissals of Usman Khawaja (16), debutant Sam Konstas (25), and Steve Smith (3) left Australia reeling, as West Indies seamers Alzarri Joseph and Anderson Phillip made full use of the helpful conditions.

With Australia in deep trouble, a crucial 112-run stand between Alex Carey and Beau Webster revived their innings. Carey, playing with aggression, scored a brisk 63, while Webster showed patience and composure for his 60. Their partnership not only rescued the innings but also provided the platform for a respectable total.

Australia eventually posted 286 before being bowled out late in the day. Alzarri Joseph was the standout bowler for the hosts, finishing with figures of 4 for 61, consistently troubling the Australian batsmen with pace and bounce. Phillip, Seales and Shamar Joseph also chipped in with key breakthroughs.

Steve Smith’s return to the lineup was short-lived, as he mistimed a pull shot just six balls into his innings. The Australian vice-captain, under pressure after a string of low scores, failed to provide the stability the team needed in the top order.

Play was halted before West Indies could begin their innings due to poor light, ending the day with the hosts yet to bat.

Pitch and Conditions

The Grenada surface offered variable bounce and moderate movement for the seamers early on. However, batting became slightly easier as the day progressed, with Carey and Webster taking advantage during their partnership.

Looking Ahead

Australia will aim to make early inroads when West Indies begin their reply on Day 2. The hosts, riding on their bowlers’ success, will look to capitalise with the bat and seize control of the match.

Summary

Despite another top-order collapse, Australia found a lifeline through Carey and Webster’s determined stand. With the pitch still offering help to the bowlers, Day 2 promises to be a pivotal one in this tightly poised contest.
