Ferozepur, Punjab – What started as a joyful game of cricket turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Sunday, when 27-year-old Harjit Singh collapsed and died just moments after hitting a six in a local match.
Harjit, a carpenter by profession and a regular in club cricket, was batting confidently at the DAV School Ground in Guru Har Sahai. He had just struck a six, bringing up 49 runs, when he suddenly knelt down and collapsed on the pitch. Shocked teammates rushed to help him and tried performing CPR before rushing him to the hospital, but it was too late. Doctors confirmed he had died of a heart attack.
The entire incident was captured on video, which has since gone viral and drawn an outpouring of grief from across the cricketing community. Harjit’s teammate, Rachit Sodhi, recalled the devastating moment. He said Harjit had looked completely fine all morning and was enjoying the game, just like he always did.
“He was happy after the six. Then, out of nowhere, he collapsed. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing,” Rachit said.
Harjit leaves behind his wife and a young child. Friends and family remember him as a kind, cheerful man who loved cricket deeply and never missed a chance to play.
This tragic incident has sparked conversations about the need for better health checks and emergency medical support at local sporting events. Many are calling for defibrillators and trained personnel to be made available, even at amateur games.
The local cricket club has suspended all matches for now and is planning a memorial to honor Harjit’s memory.
