Sri Lanka wrapped up a comprehensive victory over Bangladesh on Day 4 of the second Test at Colombo, clinching the two-match series 1-0 in dominant fashion. The hosts secured the win by an innings and 78 runs after bowling Bangladesh out for just 133 in their second innings.
Resuming Day 4 at a precarious 115/6, Bangladesh's hopes of survival were slim, and Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya ensured the inevitable was not delayed. He ran through the lower order to finish with a well-deserved five-wicket haul, dismantling any resistance the visitors could offer.
Mushfiqur Rahim was the only batter to show some fight, top-scoring for Bangladesh with 26 runs. The final four wickets fell quickly in the first session, as Bangladesh’s second innings folded for just 133 — a mere formality after their poor showing on the previous day.
Jayasuriya's exceptional performance with the ball highlighted Sri Lanka’s dominance on a pitch that offered plenty of assistance to spinners. The win not only sealed the second Test but also the series, after the first match ended in a hard-fought draw.
Pathum Nissanka, who impressed with the bat throughout the series, was adjudged both Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his consistent and impactful performances.
This victory will be a morale booster for Sri Lanka as they prepare for upcoming challenges white ball series against the Bangladesh.
Here’s how a delighted SL captain Dhananjaya de Silva summed it up:
"There was difference between the two matches. The bowlers and batters delivered here. The bowlers had their plans and they executed those plans. That's a morale booster for us, we managed to put the opposition under pressure. He (Dinusha) got those crucials breakthroughs with the ball. That's a good sign when you have strong bench strength. He (Nissanka) is performing well in all three formats and I hope he continues doing that."
